Церковь Георгия со Взвоза
В старину некоторые псковские улицы, выходящие на берега рек, назывались «взвозами».
Толковый словарь В.И. Даля определяет слово«взвоз» следующим образом: «возвозить, взвести, взваживать что-то на колесах или на полозу, в гору, вверх, на высоту... Взвоз - также взъезд, подъём, например от реки, моста или перевоза». Таких подъёмов было несколько: Георгиевский у Георгиевских ворот, Плоский у Плоских ворот, Лубянский на Запсковье, напротив Кремля. В настоящее время сохранилась церковь, в названии которой упоминается слово «взвоз», - Георгия со Взвоза. Само местонахождение Георгиевского взвоза сохраняется благодаря существующей Георгиевской улице, повторяющей его направление.

Каменная церковь «Егорий святой со Взвоза на Полонище» построена в 1494 году. В XVI-XVII веках неоднократно упоминается в Псковских летописях. В середине XVIII века в церкви был придел во имя св. Петра митрополита и каменная колокольня. Купола покрывали осиновым лемехом, а деревянные кресты — жестью. Иконостасы были резные, деревянные и позолоченные, с древними иконами. Вокруг церкви была установлена деревянная ограда. В 1831 году в результате ремонта в интерьере были расписаны своды, арки, купол и барабан.
5 октября 1923 года церковь Святого Георгия со Взвоза была закрыта. Позже использовалась как склад. Реставрация храма началась в 2013 году. Напротив него, у берега реки Великой, находится фрагмент боевой батареи 1701 года, периода Северной войны. Насыпь батареи сооружена на остатках средневековой каменной церкви Святого Николы со Взвоза. В настоящее время храм входит в список объектов всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.

The Church of St. George from Vzvoz
In the ancient times, some Pskov streets facing the banks of the rivers were called “vzvozy”.
In the Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language by Vladimir Dahl, the definition of the word “vzvoz” is the following:” to carry or lift something on wheels or on a skid uphill. Vzvoz is also an entrance, ascent, for example, from a river, bridge or ferry.” There were several such ascents such as Georgievsky one at the Georgievskiye Gates, Plosky one at the Ploskiye Gates, Lubyansky one in Zapskovye district opposite the Kremlin. At present, the church has been preserved, in the name of which the word “vzvoz” is mentioned –the Church of St. George from Vzvoz (on the Ascent). The very location of the Georgievsky Vzvoz at the Velikaya River is preserved thanks to the existing Georgiyevskaya Street, following its direction.

The stone Church of St. George from Vzvoz was built in 1494. In the 16th-17th centuries, it was repeatedly mentioned in the Pskov chronicles. In the middle of the 18th century, the church had the side chapel of St. Peter the Metropolitan and a stone bell tower. The domes were covered with aspen shingles (a tile of wood), and wooden crosses were covered with tin. The iconostases were carved, wooden and gilded, with ancient icons. A wooden fence was erected around the church. In 1831, as a result of the renovation, the vaults, arches, dome and its drum were decorated.
On October 5, 1923, the Church of St. George from Vzvoz was closed. Later it was used as a warehouse. The restoration of the church began in 2013. Opposite it, near the bank of the Velikaya River, there is an earth bastion — the preserved part of the battery of 1701 during the Great Northern War. The battery mound is built on the remains of the medieval stone Сhurch of St. George from Vzvoz.
